Skills | You don’t need special skills to be a volunteer. We’ll train you. Many volunteers bring skills from work or personal experience, but others choose to work in completely unrelated fields. We have volunteer openings for people of all skills and abilities. |
Opportunities | Volunteer Management: Assist with volunteer recruitment, placement, record keeping and recognition. Disaster Services: Provide food, shelter, comfort and home for families affected by major disasters such as fire, hurricanes and tornadoes. Disaster Action Team: Volunteers need to respond to single-family fires with a disaster action team supervisor. Disaster Preparedness Presenter: Educate individuals and groups on how to be prepared before a disaster occurs. Public Affairs: During disasters, tell the Red Cross story to your community. |
Other | The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food; health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Although the Red Cross is not a government agency, it is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes. We work in partnership with other agencies and organizations that provide services to disaster victims. |
Hurricane Matthew made landfall in North Carolina on October 8, 2016 as a Category 1 storm, causing catastrophic damage and killing 28 people. Due to its inland storm track, Matthew caused extensive damage and ultimately 45 counties received a federal disaster declaration for Individual Assistance. 28 different volunteer organizations assisted during early response phase. Volunteer organizations estimated that repair and rebuilding homes with insufficient insurance, homeowner assets, and government loans and grants would take four years. Due to resource demands of subsequent hurricanes Florence, Dorian, and Isaias, the work remains uncompleted.
Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina on September 14, 2018 as a Category 1 storm, causing catastrophic damage and killing 28 people. Ultimately 31 counties received a federal disaster declaration for Individual Assistance. Due to its coastal storm track, Florence caused extensive storm surge flooding to coastal communities including record flooding in Wilmington.
Hurricane Dorian made landfall in North Carolina on September 6, 2019 as a Category 2 storm. Prior to landfall at Cape Hatteras (Dare County) the storm caused significant damage to Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties.
Tropical Storm Fred passed across western North Carolina on August 17, 2021. The valleys in that mountainous area concentrated the heavy rainfall causing substantial flooding.
Tropical Storm Helene entered North Carolina on September 27, 2024. Although windspeeds were reduced below hurricane force, the amount of rainfall was unprecedented. Again the mountain valleys concentrated the rainfall onto the populated valleys. Twenty-nine counties in the western portion of the state were included in the federal declaration.
